whoopers

i swear, as i am about to take my last breath

and am imparting those desperate final words to my loved ones

some fucker will whoop

unlike gillian welch, however, i will not, earlier in my death rattle, have granted them permission

hey ho

folks are just excited

and with very good reason

but i can go out any night of the week and hear some idiot whoop

my opportunities to hear gil and dave are limited to these two nights

yes, you are right - dave can play the guitar

but that is why i want to listen to him do it

instead of losing the hearing in my left ear when you scream your appreciation into it from the row behind me

well, it's undeniably true, i am a curmudgeon

and gil did encourage you

but still, i would dearly love to lamp you one

and have wished to again and again over the last couple of days, as i have patiently ameliorated your enthusiasm for future listeners

outside of the whooping, this has been one of the truly great shows

it seemed like nothing could top the first night

but as we finally slide into the encores, things get very special indeed

after an insanely raw and blistering 'cortez', we assume that surely the night is done

how do you follow that?

but no, a properly psychedelic 'white rabbit' chases it down the warren, dave and gillian belting out the 'feed your head' refrain at ever increasing volume

everyone in the crowd seems overcome

and entirely unready for what comes next

a step forward onto the lip of the stage, away from mics and amplifiers, for a whisper quiet 'long black veil'

even the whooper is quiet

struck mercifully dumb at last

and i am almost, in my stupefaction, ready to forgive him

enjoy
